B. L. AUER, LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY LONG RIFLE ca. 1870 - 1880

Item #FL614 / $2,000.

B L. Auer / Louisville, KY Early Percussion Long Rifle

The percussion Schuetzen was popular during the 1870s and 1880's before the metallic cartridge was perfected.  They are heavy stock rifles, featuring large cheek pieces.

This beauty is an American percussion target rifle in Germanic schutzen-influenced style signed “B.L. Auer, Louisville”.  The rifle measures approx. 52” overall from the muzzle to the end of the schutzen buttplate, and is approx. .50 caliber with a heavy octagon barrel which measures 1-1/4” across the flats of the barrel. Half stocked in good quality walnut with good grain.  The rifle features a brass scrolled trigger guard and brass schuetzen butt with palm rest.

This antique rifle has an adjustable target-type rear sight, buck horn barrel sight, double-set triggers and a fancy pewter type forend cap with a brass-tip cleaning rod. The gun shows a heavy brown patina with the top flat being maker marked "B. L. Auer, Louisville, KY".   There is some pitting at the firing areas, breech and barrel. The stock is of good quality walnut with a good grain and shows some small antique repairs. The breech shows a tap hole with plug from some sort of sight.

The beautiful brass Schuetzen style triggerguard features a forward curving spur and rearward curving grip; the Schuetzen style buttplate is a tarnished brass patina.  It features a fancy inlaid pewter forend tip, single wedge through German silver escutcheons, fancy brass sideplate secured by three screws around the lock screw engraved with an arrow and wreath. It has an inlaid brass fleur-de-lis style guard extension which supports an antique palm rest. The single acting lock and double set triggers function well mechanically.

The condition is fair to good overall. The bore shows rifling. Guns from Louisville are scarce and desirable and this one is made by one of the famous Kentucky rifle makers.  Balthaser L. Auer (1825 - 1910) was born in Switzerland. He passed away in 1910 in Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky.
