Karankawa-style Wooden Ball-Headed Mace

This is a very early ball-headed (Karankawa?)C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\PC.Website\NativeAmerican\Native-Karankawa-warclub-Berlandier-1930.jpg mace.  This weapon is constructed of one piece of wood - the head being naturally formed as a tree burl.  The shaft is 9 and 5/8" long and 1 and 1/16" in diameter.  The head is 17 and 3/4" in circumference and approximately 3" high.

Overall, this quite vicious club is 12 and 1/2" long.  It weighs an impressive 2 pounds 11 ounces - due to the dense nature of burl.

Photo At Right: “War club of the Crank-a-wa Indians of Texas” in the Smithsonian Institution that is said to be a natural burl of Ironwood acquired in 1838. Smithsonian catalog number E5458-0, illustrated in The Indians of Texas in 1830 by Berlandier (1969).

There is a hole made through the handle end where a leather or rawhide strap would have been strung to keep the weapon around the wrist.  The handle of this club was, at the time it was made, about twice as long as it is now; however, the shortening of the handle (probably a repair of a break during use) was done at least 100 years ago and is not a new alteration.

The wear that is evident on this mace is consistent with long use.  There are numerous areas of stain and the wood of the shaft is worn soft.  The best-known examples of this type of mace are those made by the Karankawa Indians of Texas, noted specimens collected between the 1820's and the 1840's.  The territory of the Karankawa stretched along the Texas Coast, area of the Brazos River Delta and the Corpus Christi area.
