Elizabeth B. Custer "Boots and Saddles" /1st Edition Item #B122 / $950.
About This Book:
Mrs. Custer accompanied her husband General G. A. Custer to all the outposts to which he was stationed for Western campaigns. These are her first-hand accounts of the years from her marriage in 1864, through his assumption of command of the 7th Cavalry in 1866 to the assignment to the Dakota Territory. She was ordered by General Custer to remain in camp instead of venturing along on the Summer Campaign that would be his last. Also published in this book are copies of personal letters and excerpts from General Custer's journals with the relevant dates and addressees noted. A truly historic documentation of a heavily debated military campaign and public policy, written in the first person by the closest possible person to the action and the main character and unadulterated by time and politics. Boots and Saddles Preface: "One of the motives that have actuated me in recalling these simple annals of our daily life, has been to give a glimpse to civilians of garrison and camp life-- about which they seem to have such a very imperfect knowledge. This ignorance exists especially with reference to anything pertaining to the cavalry, which is almost invariably stationed on the extreme frontier. The isolation of the cavalry posts makes them quite inaccessible to travelers, and the exposure incident to meeting warlike Indians does not tempt the visits of friends or even the venturesome tourist. Our live, therefore was often as separate from the rest of the world as if we had been living on an island in the ocean." Elizabeth B. Custer "Boots and Saddles" /1st Edition / Item #B122 / $950.
