Brigham Young's Marlin 'Victor' with Notarized Provenance

About This Historic Firearm:

From the collection of Gwen Young Wilcox. This is a Marlin derringer in excellent condition, serial number 13,739.  It is marked J. M. Marlin, New Haven, Conn, Pat. April 8, 1870, stamped 'VICTOR' on the barrel.

The Letter of Provenance (pictured above) states:

"October 6, 1977

SUBJECT: Brigham Young's Gun

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

In 1966 I bought a number of early Utah artifacts from Edith Wooley Thomas who was the daughter of Bishop Edwin Wooley.  Bishop Wooley was a very close friend to Brigham Young and a number of items I bought from Edith were given to her father by President Young. Included with these artifacts was a derringer, Serial No. 13739 and marked J. M. Marlin, New Haven, Conn, Pat, April 8, 1870, with the name Victor stamped on the barrel.  I asked Edith about the gun and she said it was given to her father as a gift from President Young shortly before his death.

I have been a collector of Brigham Young and early Utah artifacts for many years and have been responsible for much of the collections exhibited in the Lion House, Beehive House, and Brigham Young's Farm House.  The Brigham Young University bought the papers and books I received from Edith Wooley Thomas and have them stored in the school's archives.

Brigham Young was given gifts by US and foreign dignitaries.  He also gave gifts to visitors and close friends.  The derringer is an example of Brigham's thoughtfulness to those he considered a friend."

Signed by Gwen Young Wilcox and Notarized On October 7, 1977 in Salt Lake County, Utah."
