Central Plains
Stone-Headed War Club
From the collection and estate of Robert Owen Browne, noted archeologist and founder of the Ojai Valley Museum. A similar piece is documented in the book "Native American Weapons", as shown in the photo at right. This is a Central Plains Indian beaded war club with a stone head. This weapon is constructed of a stone head lashed to a wooden shaft with braided horsehair and decorated along the entire shaft with multi-colored seed beads. The conical stone head is approximately 5 and 1/4 inches long and 2 inches in diameter at the middle. The piece is 17 inches long, not including the horsehair loop at the end of the shaft. The overall condition of this club is extremely good, considering its age. There is approximately one inch of beading that is missing at the top of the shaft. As mentioned above this piece was acquired at the estate auction of a museum quality collection that was established in the early 1920's -- the estate of noted archeologist, historian and collector, Robert Owen Browne. Mr. Browne was born in 1902. After graduating from Regis College in Denver, Colorado, he moved to California in 1927 to work for Standard Oil until his retirement in 1966. A founder of the Ojai Valley Museum, the Albinger Archeological Museum and the Archeological Society of Ventura County, Mr. Robert Owen Browne continued his education, making a name for himself in anthropology and archaeology and was chosen to study with Dr. Leakey in Kenya in 1966. In 1989, Mr. Browne was honored for distinguished contributions to California history by the Conference of California Historical Societies.
