Civil War Era Cutlery

This is another rare collection of Civil War era cutlery consisting of 7 matching 4-tined forks (4) and knives (3) and a similarly patterned and constructed 3-tined fork.  As expected, they are quite heavy and well-made, these have wooden handles that have been inlaid with steel decoration.  They have NOT been cleaned and have some grime and patina built up on the metal.  Each fork weighs 2.15 ounces and measures 7 1/2 inches long.  Each knife weighs 2.3 ounces and measures 9 1/2 inches long.

The two patterns exhibited are (7) a semi-circle of 1/16th inch diameter at each end on both sides of the handles.  This semi-circle is bisected with a line having a dot at the end which points to the middle of the handle.  The unique fork is patterned in a similarly constructed manner, however the shape of the inlays differs.  The pattern is a hatch-mark set at both ends and both sides of the handle.

The 4-tined forks have tines measuring 2 1/8 inches long and are quite sharp. The 3-tined fork has tines measuring 1 3/4 inches long and are also quite sharp.  The middle tine is longer than the two outer ones.  The knives are rounded at the end and do not have sharp edges.  The blades are approximately 3/4 inches wide along their entire length. All the forks and knives feature small-diameter metal pins are used to attach the handles.  They date to the mid to late 1800's.
