Item #UA120 SOLD
1860's Pince-Nez Civil War Sharp-Shooting Glasses This pair of spring bridge pince-nez shooting glasses are Civil War Sharp Shooting Glasses. Originally designed to correct floating myopic eyes, they became popular for shooting. They are in very good condition, even still felted at the nose, although one tiny crack is evident. They measure 3 1/2” across. The special amber lenses are frosted to focus on shooting the large caliber bullet about to be sent into an opponent. Note – The Civil War was only fought during the day and often day brightness required sunglasses or these amber glasses with special focus. Pince-Nez were in use well prior to the Civil War and continued in popularity until the early 1930's. This type of glasses did not have temples, but used spring loaded nose pads that literally pinched the nose firmly to keep the glasses in place. A chain was usually attached to these glasses, with a little loop on the other end. This loop hooked over the ear, so that if the glasses fell off they would hang by this chain rather than crash to the floor. Pince Nez glasses sat farther down the nose than regular glasses. 1860's Pince-Nez Civil War Sharp-Shooting Glasses / Item #UA120 SOLD Feedback from the buyer of these glasses:
