Signed/1st Edition Cow Camps and Cattle Herds Item #B130 / $315.
About This Book: Cow Camps and Cattle Herds, by John A. Lomax. Illustrated by the publisher, William D. Wittliff. Signed by the author's son (John Lomax, Jr. who also wrote the introduction to this book, telling how this previously unpublished and overlooked manuscript by his father came to print. There are chapters on Longhorns, the trail to Dodge, cowboy's horse, recreations, vernacular, camp songs, justice and other recorded history.
From the book: "The cowboy was a supreme realist primarily. He didn't cotton to signs or omens or superstitions. When drunk he might indulge in tall tales, though I think that the Pecos Bill and like stories are creations of fourth rate literary hacks who wouldn't know which side of a cow to milk. My piece is bound to be very light on cowboy folklore. Customs, yes; vernacular, original and vivid, a lot of it. Beyond that I must part company with the movie and stage pictures and recite facts -- what I have seen and known. "Old Joe Clark has got a cow---- she was muley born, It takes a jaybird forty-eight hours to fly from horn to horn." Signed/1st Edition Cow Camps and Cattle Herds / Item #B130 / $315.
