Horn Handled .44 Caliber Dumonthier Cane Gun (1885)
About This Historic Firearm:
This highly desirable breech-loading French hidden trigger gun cane was made by Dumonthier circa1885. It is all original and marked DUMONTHIER on the breech and has two cartouche stamps. The handle is of horn, topping an ornate gold-filled collar, a 28" rosewood shaft. Overall length is 35 inches. The action opens by twisting the rear to the left and pulling back to expose the chamber. Pushing forward and twisting to the right readies it for firing. The button trigger is cleverly hidden on the right side of the steer horn handle. The handle is 4-1/8 inches in the horizontal which extending down 5-1/4 inches. The cane shows a great patina consistent with age. All original cane and gun - the wooden tip which protects the walking end of the barrel is a more recent addition.
Celestin Dumonthier's gun canes are featured in Catherine Dike's classic "Canes & Curiosa" and similar gun canes are on pages 342-344 in Chapter 33 on "Breech-loading Firearms."
Celestin Dumonthier's factory was located at Rue des Petits-Hotels 23, Sailleville, Oise, and he filed patents in England in as early as 1876. Greatly sought after by weapons collectors, Dumonthier continued to produce in Paris until the German occupation during World War II, when all of his stock and documents were confiscated. The mechanism is fully functional.
