Very Scarce E. C. Lee Chaps (Pierre, South Dakota) Woolies

These rare historic E. C. Lee chaps were made at the early turn of the century. They are marked on the belt E. C. LEE / MAKER / PIERRE, SO. DAK.  This mark is that of Mr. Emmett C. Lee - a master saddle maker and leather craftsman who had a Saddlery in Pierre, South Dakota between 1907 and 1927.  His wares were available by catalog as well as from his storefront.  His saddles consistently displayed detailed leather carvings - a style which as to catch on more as time passed.  Mr. Lee's reputation grew as the maker of the Cooper Contest Saddles for Kenneth Cooper, who lived west of Ft. Pierre, South Dakota.  The swells of the Contest Saddle came out wide on both sides so a rider could get his knees under them and lock on in a 'Bear Trap' design.  They were later disallowed in competition due to the advantage given the rider.

Nearly all the early E. C. Lee saddles were made with a single rigging, unless there was a special order from a customer who was accustomed to a back cinch (generally from a Southern state).  His raw-hide covered trees were of superior quality and all works are exceptionally collectible and well-made.  His chaps were in high demand and their superior quality led to very few left in more than just shreds from continual use.  This pair is 36" long and is in exceptionally good shape.  A lot of the hair has been used off by the original owner and the end of the belt is missing, but the superior workmanship is evident in every part of this piece, from the tooling in the belt to the stitching and design of the chaps.

E. C. LEE'S saddle stamp- (an example for comparison).

A pair of E. C. Lee chaps is very difficult to find - and yet they are full of character and a great piece of Americana and saddlemaking history.
