Very Early Side Saddle [Pre-Civil War]
About This Unique Saddle: This venerable antique side saddle could very well date from as long ago as the 1840's. The beautiful stamping in the leather fender is gorgeous and the horn is decorated with the matching floral motif. The carpet seat is in excellent condition. Side saddles are getting more and more difficult to find and those that are truly not just antique but pre-civil war, are extremely difficult to find in a condition to display, as this one is. A picture of what a lady of means would ride, it has fallen into some disrepair- the stirrup is detached and the straps below the saddle as well as the pad are fragile and have damage. These issues lose importance when the age and lasting beauty of the piece is considered. The overall length is 25 inches. The seat (measured from the horn to the cantle) is 13 inches. The cantle is 14 inches wide and the horn is 5 inches high.
