100th Anniversary of the Elko Rodeo founded by Famous Bit, Spur and Saddlemaker, G. S. Garcia Rodeo dates were July 12, 13, 14, 2012.
Horse racing was always a large part of such
fiestas and although it was still outlawed in the state of Nevada at the time,
it seemed to many that the law was being effectively challenged. Looking ahead,
as he normally did, G. S. cleared a tract of land on the opposite bank of the
Humboldt river for a race-track—choosing to hold the Elko Rodeo at that site
until horses could be raced there as well. In 1915, horse racing was legalized
by the state legislature and became a staple of the rodeo, along with many other
competitions.
The Legend Lives On as the Silver State Stampede rides into
the Elko County Fairgrounds with a Centennial Celebration through the weekend.
The event includes a tribute to Paula Wright who insisted G.S. Garcia's vision
be recognized as the founder of the original Wild West Show. Dee Dee Garcia is
the granddaughter of G.S. and the Grand Marshall of this years' parade.
Michael and Sarah Redman of Pure Cowboy joined with Dee Dee Garcia to present a
one-of-a-kind museum display of G. S. Garcia original bits, spurs, saddles and
family heirlooms at J. M. Capriola Co. store, free to the public.
G.S. (as he was known to family and friends) designed and built an inner 1/2 mile oval horse track and an outer speedway for the just emerging automobile racing fever, all of which was surrounded by 500 poplar trees imported from Salt Lake City to provide shade and a grandness to the little desert oasis of craftsmanship, industry and entertainment. The coveted prize of a "G. S. Garcia" saddle was awarded to the winner of the saddle bronc competition for many years. Today, a saddle made in the G.S. shop is worth thousands of dollars to collectors and is quite difficult to find. His bits and spurs are quite simply the best and most beautiful of the era and are eagerly sought after by avid collectors and investors around the world. In 2012, the Elko Rodeo was held on July 12, 13 and 14 at the Elko Fairgrounds. If you plan to attend, let us know so we can make plans to meet up with you at this wonderful celebration of the American Old West and one of its’ great leaders; visionary, businessman and artist, G. S. Garcia. Pure Cowboy is a proud sponsor of the Elko, Nevada Silver State Stampede Paula Bear Wright, of J. M. Capriola Co. in Elko, Nevada passed away on Wednesday, June 20th, from a horse riding accident. Her latest project had been celebrating the Silver State Stampede Centennial. She felt very passionately about the Rodeo's 100th birthday. Her primary focus was to have the rodeo be a community- wide event with community members involved participating, volunteering and attending. She will be missed. |
