Vintage Doctor's Visiting Bag - made by the G. S. Garcia Saddlery, Elko Nevada

This fantastic G. S. Garcia made doctor's visiting bag was made between 1900 - 1908.  As was the practice of the time, this wonderful carry case was made with a slide button solid brass top clasp and flip up dual side locks.  In that era of house calls and the country doctor, quality doctor's bags (called Visiting Cases, at the time) were in high demand and made by most of the prominent saddleries of the day.  Saddleries produced many other items along with their saddles- such as chaps, bridles, bits, spurs, headstalls, reins and martingales.

The more intricate and well-made doctor's visiting bags were highly prized at the time and became a certain status symbol for the physician and a source of personal pride.  Currently, their scarcity makes them a highly prized addition to all Western, Medical, and Americana museum and private collections. 

The age (1900 to 1908) and the skilled workmanship and design of this particular visiting bag - along with the fame of the maker, stamped in the bottom (G. S. GARCIA / MAKER / ELKO, NEV.) makes this bag a unique piece and extremely desirable.

Variations of this floral carved bag with the same hardware appear in the leather goods section of the G. S. Garcia catalogs between 1903 and 1908.  The bag measures 15" long x 9" high x 7" wide.  The original handle and hardware are all present and the bag is  only missing one of the 4 brass buttons on the bottom.  The center of the bag features the most fantastic representation of a pair of shaking hands.  The clasped hands are subject to many interpretations including one of friendship, or in the physicians world, one of trust between doctor and patient.

The leather is in wonderfully supple condition for a bag any age - and extremely difficult to find in one of this age.
