Very Early and Rare G. S. Garcia #16 Bit

This is an extremely rare and early G. S. Garcia bit.  The characteristic engraving style places the silversmithing as having been done by master engraver Juan (John) Estrada in the Garcia shop. The the crescent style of the #16 pattern is very rare and highly desirable.  That would put the date of manufacture of this piece between 1896 and 1906.  This bit has two stamps from the G. S. Garcia shop "G. S. GARCIA".  As the cheeks of this bit are forged prior to the inlay of silver, this stamping would be attributed to the maker using two of one side blanks, instead of taking a left and a right side.

This is a very hard to find silver inlaid half-breed bit, Catalog Pattern #16.  It features an inlaid 6-Point silver star on the upper cheeks that is set atop a beautifully engraved crescent moon with a center heart.  Of the three crescent patterns made, this was the highest price at a whopping $25 in the early 1920's!  It is in Fine, 100% original condition.

The bit is hand forged and engraved / inlaid with silver.  This piece more than most is representative of the artistic power of the G. S. stable of engravers and designers.  The simplicity, boldness and individuality shown in this bit design was (and is) revolutionary.  The maker's mark is authentic and period correct.

Juan (John) Estrada was a contemporary of many of the most famous silversmiths who went on to fame in their own shops.  He was a master silver engraver who worked at the G. S. Garcia shop in Elko from 1896 until 1906, when he moved to Winnemucca to work as the Master Engraver for the Goldberg-Staunton Saddlery Company - partly owned by Gus Goldberg, another one time employee of G. S. Garcia.  He continued to work with Gus Goldberg, moving in 1921 to Sacramento to join Goldberg Saddlery.  In 1925, the makers of this set met up again in San Francisco and Juan (John) Estrada formed a partnership with his early associate, known through G. S. Garcia - Rafael Gutierrez.

This is a true piece of Western bit history.  Breathtaking.

Other bits in the Pure Cowboy collection attributed to Mr. Estrada can be found in the G. S. Garcia Headstall Set and G. S. Garcia 1890 Santa Barbara Bit
