# 10 Very Early G. S. Garcia Spurs with Original Chains, Leathers and Scarce Enhanced Rowel.

These silver spurs are an extremely collectible example of the work being produced by the Elko, Nevada shop of G.S. Garcia in the early days of the saddle, bit and spur-maker.  This pair was acquired from the Roy Rogers Museum through their liquidation auction.   Each spur is neatly marked for museum cataloging as #133a and 133b on the inside of the heel bands.  The markings are made with white pen in very small characters.  The Roy Rogers Museum was originally in Victorville, California, moved to Branson, Missouri in 2003 and closed its doors on December 12th, 2009.

A woodcut picture of the spurs are shown on page 107 of an early G. S. Garcia catalog (pictured above) with the following description:  "G. S. GARCIA / ELKO, NEVADA HAND-MADE SPURS No. 10. Silver inlaid.  $10.00.  Any of these spurs sent postpaid by registered mail upon receipt of the catalogue price"

Each of these spurs features a series of three silver inlaid boxes, engraved with a repeating floral leaf pattern on the outside; a mirror of the pattern used on the #6 G. S. early bits.

The left inside heel band of the right spur is stamped G. S. GARCIA and the right inside heel band of the left spur is stamped ELKO, NEV (with the Dutch - or inverted - N).  The shank is striped with silver bands.  The rowels are distinctively stamped with outward V bands and are enhanced with a round of meticulously engraved thin silver.

The leathers are original; stamped in a floral pattern. The silver conchos measure 2 inches in diameter.  Approximately 1/2 inch of the buckling tip of the right leathers is gone .  The original double heel chains are present.

The spurs have the original engraved leathers with silver conchos as well as the original chains.  Condition is extremely good, there is age-appropriate wear with some pitting.  The shank of the left spur moves slightly in its housing, when pushed and looks like an old repair was attempted.

These spurs measure 3 1/2" Wide at the opening of the yoke.  The rowels are 2" in diameter with 8 points.  The overall length is 6 3/4".

These G. S. Garcia, Elko, Nev. #10 Spurs are hand-forged and hand inlaid with silver, as was the practice of the time. A true piece of Western spur history.  Unquestionably early and extremely collectible.  As with all the spurs we offer, they have been left to build a fantastic patina and have not been "cleaned".
