Extremely Scarce G.S. Garcia Heart Concho Studded Batwing Chaps

These gorgeous chaps were made circa 1910 in the G.S. Garcia shop in Elko, Nevada and discovered at a barn sale about 20 years ago in Minot, North Dakota.

Although the style became more ornate in later years, the patterns, conchos and buttons are the same as those shown in the 1924 catalog, pictured at right.  Note, particularly, the star pattern made with the buttons and the heart conchos.

G.S. Garcia made quite a few different styles of chaps, including woolies.  Chaps and other leather work are extremely rare, especially in very good condition, as these are.  G.S. Garcia chaps were treasured as being the best-made chaps available and the majority were worn until they were completely used up.

They are stamped "G.S. GARCIA / ELKO, NEV." on the waist belt.  These chaps were used by their owner and show signs of the many tasks that would have been undertaken while they were worn.  Some of the leather has minor tears and normal wear, as would be expected from chaps of this age.

Guadalupe S. Garcia was born in Sonora, Mexico in 1864 and was raised in Santa Margarita, near San Luis Obispo, California.  In 1882, he apprenticed with the Arana Saddle Shop in San Luis Obispo, prior to opening his own shop in Santa Margarita in 1883.  In 1894, G. S Garcia moved to Elko, Nevada.  The first Garcia catalog was published in 1897.  The Saddlery was employing about 20 craftsmen and apprentices at that time.

By the start of 1904, the G. S. Garcia Harness and Saddlery would be one of Elko's largest employers.  The quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail was unmatched.  When coupled with G. S. Garcia's natural marketing ability, there was no stopping the resulting success of the company.
