Item #B985 / $4,500.
1890's G. S. Garcia Santa Barbara Kissing Bird Spade with Chains
The bit measures 5 & 1/2" wide by
7"
long. The larger silver buttons are 1/2" in diameter, the smaller ones are
1/4". There are 8 copper bands attached to the mouth of the bit (4 on each side).
The roller is missing. The slide measures 2" long by 3/4" wide.
The kissing bird piece is 2" by 1 & 1/2" at the widest point. This bit has
the original rein chains - 8 & 1/2 inches of chain on 3 inches of hardware. The bit is hand-forged and hand inlaid with coin silver, as was the practice of the time. This piece marks the beginning of the use of crescent shapes, sunburst dot patterns and the signature cheek conchos that are to mark Garcia bits as well as many other Western bits to come. The maker's mark is authentic and very early. This is a true piece of Western bit history. Unquestionably early and extremely collectible. G. S.
