Item #B881   SOLD

Pre-1910 G. S. Garcia #6 Bit with Extremely Rare Stamp (1)

About The Bit:

This bit is a #6 G. S. Garcia California style bit. The engravings are of a beautiful abstract floral design, light and airy in composition.  The inlaid portion of the cheeks is composed of three panels, an inverted crescent, and a rounded box all neatly engraved in line drawings.  There are two small buttons present just behind the mouth of the bit, engraved with a flower.  The sides of the mouth are marked with 4 striations, dash mark embellishments made by the artisan while the steel was still hot from the forge.  This decoration is shown in the catalog rendition of the #6 and was part of the stock design.

This remarkable bit has a unique number 1 stamped in front of and a bit above the ELKO, NEV. stamp.  This is an inlaid stiff jaw bit with a kissing bird spade featuring a 1/2" copper cricket.

The bit measures 5" wide by 7" long.  The silver dots are 3/8" in diameter.  The engraved buttons are 1/4" in diameter; the buttons on the bar are 1/2" in diameter.  There are individual copper wrappings attached to the mouth of the bit on each side.  The rolling mouth piece is striated in a straight pattern within a slide that measures 2 & 1/4" long by 3/4" wide.  The spade piece is 1 and 1/2" in length by 1 and 3/4" wide.

The bit is hand-forged and hand engraved, inlaid with silver.  The #6 was available as a stock bit in coin silver with a loose jaw. The maker's mark is authentic and period correct.  The mark is present on the inside of both cheeks and reads: G. S. GARCIA / ELKO NEV. -- The inverted or 'Dutch' N is evident, dating the bit to pre-1910.  The "ELKO, NEV" mark on the inside of the left cheek is stamped upside down. Unquestionably G.S. Garcia and highly collectible.
