Very Early G. S. Garcia #60 Ring Bit engraved by Gutierrez

This is an extremely rare and early G. S. Garcia bit with a ring bit feature.  It was engraved by mastered engraver Raphael Gutierrez in the Garcia shop. The ring bit is a rare find, as is the crescent style of the #60.

The bit measures 6" wide by 8" long.  Each of the conchos at the cheeks is 2 inches in diameter.  The crescent piece is 3 and 1/4 inches long by 2 inches high.  The rolling mouth piece is striated in a diagonal pattern within a slide that measures 2 inches long by 3/4" wide.  The removable ring portion is 5 inches wide by 5 inches long.

The bit is hand forged and engraved / inlaid with coin silver.  This piece more than most is representative of the artistic power of the G. S. stable of engravers and designers.  The simplicity, boldness and individuality shown in this bit design was (and is) revolutionary.  The maker's mark is authentic and period correct.  The mark is present on the inside of the left cheek and reads: G. S. GARCIA / ELKO NEV. -- The Dutch or 'backwards' N is evident.

Raphael 'Filo' Gutierrez was born in 1889 and was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento, CA prior to joining G. S. Garcia.  He is credited with producing some of Garcia's finest work.  In 1917, Gutierrez joined Bill Phillips in Cheyenne, WY, creating the famous shop of "Phillips & Gutierrez".  In the 1920's, he rejoined Juan Estrada (also a G. S. Garcia engraver) and made spurs and bits for many famous makers as well as independently.  The engraving style of this bit has been identified conclusively as being that of Mr. Gutierrez.

This is a true piece of Western bit history.  Breathtaking.

Feedback from the buyer of this bit:

"PACKAGE DELIVERED !!  UPS arrived at 7:10 PM.  Everything was safe and sound.  The bits and spurs are simply awesome!!  I should have emailed an hour ago but was busy unpacking and enjoying.  I'm sorry about that.  The book and catalog will be such great reference material to add to my library.  Thank you very much for all you've done, it's been great working with you."
