About Henry Garcia / Garcia Saddlery Co. Salinas, Ca: Henry Garcia was the third son of G.S. and Saturnina Garcia, born in Elko, Nevada in 1911. He made news by falling out of a 2-story window at the age of 2 and not suffering any ill effects, as a roof broke his fall. He joined his older brothers, Les and Walter, in apprentice-ship at the shop, learning silver work, saddle making and the business in general. Henry, like his father, had a special love of leatherwork and was drawn to saddle making, though he also had skill as an engraver of bits and spurs. The only mark in use at this time was the established mark of G. S. Garcia Saddlery (G.S. GARCIA, ELKO NEV). 1930 was a year of change for the Garcia family and business. G.S. and his wife moved to Los Angeles, California (where they had opened a storefront in 1918 on Sunset Boulevard) in hopes of improving his health, leaving the management of the G. S. Garcia Saddlery completely in the hands of Henry, who graduated from High School the same year, and his older brother, Les. The eldest, Walter, had been running the company for some years and was also a great maker of all things cowboy, but tragically died in 1928 at the age of 32. After the passing of their father in 1933 and the effects of the Depression, Henry and his brother, Les, decided that there were more opportunities to grow the business outside of the small town of Elko. They settled on Salinas, California - about 100 miles south of San Francisco and Henry left to set up the new shop while Les remained in Elko and continued to manage the business and make bits. At this time, the maker mark was changed to: GARCIA / ELKO, NEV. and was in use until 1937 when Les closed the Elko shop completely and moved with the rest of the family to Salinas where Henry had established a going concern on Gabilan Street - at which time the mark became: GARCIA / SADDLERY CO. / SALINAS, CALIF. *Personal facts and citing of conversations etc.. were used from "Legacy of Silver Saddles: G.S. Garcia to J.M. Capriola Co. 1864 to 2004." Garcia Saddlery, Salinas Spurs with Period Leathers / Item #SP471 / $3,750. *Your purchase of G. S.
