Gary Keithley, Melba Idaho

This is a set of Gary Keithley silver inlaid filigree spurs. Gary is a contemporary and very famous spur maker from Melba, Idaho. His spurs are highly desired by collectors and he is one of the most highly regarded spur makers today.
Both spurs are marked Gary Keithley, Melba Idaho and the buckles on the straps are also marked GK Idaho. These spurs are silver inlaid and have the filigree on one side and cut or engraved on the other. Spur dimensions are 3-3/8” heel opening, 1-1/2” band width (at widest point), and 2-3/4” rowels. Overall length of spurs is 8”.

Mr. Keithley grew up on the ranch that has belonged to the Keithley family since 1872.  As a child, he helped his grandfather with daily chores and the care of livestock. While in high school, he began making leather items, such as belts, chaps, headstalls, repairing spur straps and other tack.  At that time, he avidly read leather tooling magazines.  While he attended the Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon, Gary visited Jack Fisher's saddle shop, observed how he worked, and was taught the first steps in building his own saddle.  It was, says Gary, built with Fisher's help.  In 1988, interested in learning production saddle making, he apprenticed with Billy Cook.  Gary worked intermittently on ranches and on gear making until the late 1980's.  In 1992, at the late Elmer Miller's Bit and Spur School, he apprenticed to Gary Weber, Keithley learned from Kenneth Queen, a family friend, how to overlay steel with sterling silver.  He is also an accomplished silversmith known for the quality and beauty of his bits, spurs and occasionally, jewelry.  In addition, his wife, Linda Morton-Keithley is a saddle-blanket weaver.
