Gene Autry Biography

About This Stetson Hat, Worn and Signed by Gene Autry:

A big white cowboy hat, a trusty steed, a good heart and a song to sing—that was Gene Autry, a performer who first found fame and fortune as a “singing cowboy” in the 1930s.

This beautiful white Stetson was worn by one of the best-known of all of the great Singing Cowboys, Gene Autry.  He signed it in three places and gave it to his close friend Ed Gregory of Nashville, Tennessee.  The hat is in the Tom Mix style worn by so many of the iconic Western film actors, beginning with the 'real McCoy', designed by Max J. Meyer of Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1910, whose modification of the Stetson 'Boss of the Plains" hat, for Hollywood Silent Western Film actor Tim McCoy, was at the beginning of the 10 gallon hat design era.

This hat was purchased from the Shudde Bros. of Houston, Texas which is still very much in business today and has a history of having supplied hats to many of the Hollywood elite in the 1940's and 50's at the height of the American Western genre.

The interior silk lining is present and in excellent condition.  It is white and marked with the Shudde Brother logo.  The crown is creased in his signature Montana Peak.  The hatband is 1/4inch leather studded with diamond shaped silver conchos.  The buckle is marked "STETSON".  The interior band is in good shape (the hat has been worn) and reads "Shudde Bros. / HOUSTON".  Mr. Autry has signed the band "Gene Autry" and written "To Ed" on the silk lining and directly below that on the band is again signed in the leather "With my best always, Gene Autry".
