About This Royal Stetson Whippet - Westernized Fedora:

This wonderfully Westernized fedora hat is in the Whippet style and is made by Stetson.  We acquired it on a Reservation in Southeastern Idaho from a man whose grandfather gave him the hat.  It is one of their premier line of hats called the Royal Stetson, and was made in the 1930's.  When new, it would have looked much like the photo at the left.  This hat was generally ordered by jazz musicians and others who spent more time in the city.  The hat may have been traded by a salesperson travelling through the West and then modified to fit the style of the new owner. 

Many hats that would seem more at home in Eastern cities, such as the top hat of the 1880's, have turned up in the West as part of Native American outfits that sometimes seem quite obscure.  The resulting images are extremely beautiful.  The photograph at right is Nana, in his modified Stetson, with the brim turned up.  The Shoshone man who improved this hat in his own tradition would be just one of many Native Americans, cowboys, rodeo hands, Wild West performers and ranchers who have taken the trappings of the East and improved them in the Western fashion.  The photograph at left is of Hopi men and boys, taken between 1880 and 1900.  The man standing second from the left is wearing a top hat that has been modified in much the same way as this, later, hat.

This hat has been worn for many years, but surprisingly there are very few issues with the condition.  Of course, the proud owner has changed the band and this only adds to the character of the hat as the snakeskin is quite as old as the hat.  There is a tear in the Montana Peak apex of the crown that does not show as it is in the crease.  The interior band is adorned with the gold Stetson mark as follows: an eagle accompanied by a beaver and a mythical bird.  Below the mark is written: "JOHN B. STETSON / COMPANY".  Next to the mark are the words: "Royal Stetson".  The Royal Stetson label is repeated in the silk lining.
