Lichtenberger Ferguson Saddle

This beautifully fully-engraved saddle is an amazing piece of Cowboy history.  At the time it was made, this was a top of the line saddle from one of the country's most prestigious makers.  The Lichtenberger Ferguson Co. was a Los Angeles, California company that operated between the 1923 and 1959.  It began under the name Los Angeles Saddlery (1920-1923) and was sold to Heiser Saddlery in 1958 along with Keyston Brothers to create the three-label company: Heiser - Keyston- Lichtenberger.  Lichtenberger-Ferguson chaps, saddles and holsters were prized for their workmanship and style.  They continue to be highly collectible pieces today.

This saddle is maker marked on the front of the seat: "LICHTENBERGER FERGUSON CO. / LOS ANGELES / MAKERS".  The mark is clearly stamped with a picture of a steer head in the middle.

The stunningly good condition for a saddle of this age and obvious use by its owner.  The only areas of condition issues are the fleece (normal wear, thankfully - still original!) and the left stirrup is slightly misshapen on one side due to improper storage.  All the engraving is clear and beautifully rendered by a master leather craftsman.  The floral motif is one of the California Poppy, featuring not only the flower and the foliage, but the stylized flower buds as well.  The balance of the design is noteworthy and the full engraving of the saddle is an amazing feat of workmanship, time and dedication to the piece.

The cantle is 3 1/2" high as measured from the base of the saddle to the top.  The saddle is 27" in overall length and is a 15" seat.  The front cinch rings are present and have leather straps still attached.  The engineering of this saddle is beautifully shown in the rigging under the jockey-- using multiple points of anchor to ensure a safe seat.

What a stellar example of this maker's masterpieces of working art.  This saddle was most definitely owned by a boss -- whether he was a rancher, mine owner, banker or other man of means in the West.  The beauty and the history of this classic is quite overwhelming.  It is a piece of California history from the heyday of the big Western cattle ranches and their Hollywood portrayal.
