Max
J. Meyer of Cheyenne, Wyoming invented the first '10-gallon' style hat.
He opened his dry-goods store in
Cheyenne at the height of the cattle
drives in 1890.
The big, tall, wide cowboy hat of
the movies was later called the Colonel McCoy by Stetson. Max
Meyer made a hat with a 9' crown and 6" brim for movie star Tim McCoy.
in 1910 or 1925, depending upon the source. Regardless of the
date, the collaboration between Max J. Meyer and Stetson is extremely
historic in the world of the Western hat collector.

This hat is a true 'Boss of the Plains" as invented by John B. Stetson, the style that started it all. The crown measures 5inches high and the brim is 3inches wide. This hat is in very good condition with minor pitting in the beaver and some fraying of the ribbon hatband. It is an impressive hat and beautifully styled. The silk lining bears the writing: "MADE EXPRESSLY FOR / Max. J. Meyer Co. Inc. / Cheyenne". The interior band is marked with a ribbon and beaver mark that bears the writing "JOHN B. STETSON CO. / TRADEMARK / PHILAD'A / CLEAR BEAVER" the opposite interior is inscribed the name: "H. A. Duncan". Size: Measures 8inches front to back, interior opening. The Max J. Meyer John B.
