About The Maker:

Miles City was a legendary cattle town in eastern Montana-- the end of the trail for many longhorn cattle drives from Texas in the 1890's.  Miles City Saddlery was one of two saddle making shops that helped to make the cowtown famous.  Charles E. Coggshall, together with his father, disposed of their livestock and in December of 1896, joined Al Furstnow and became the only major saddlery between Billings and Dickinson, North Dakota.  In 1899, Furstnow and Coggshall split up, forming a rivalry that lasted well into the 20th Century.

Charles Coggshall was a strict taskmaster from the old school of hard work and incredible quality.  He had the amazing ability to employ the best craftsmen anywhere.  Although he was not a saddle-maker, his years of experience a an avid horseman enabled him to recognize the virtues of a good saddle.  Improvements and changes were constantly being made over the years.  The Montana Saddle Tree was perfected under his guidance, and he was responsible for many improvements including the swell fork and flat-plate rigging.

Remarks from Miles City Saddlery, regarding this saddle:

"Michael, Thank you for sharing your old #4 with us. I find it very interesting that your saddle depicts a bare breasted woman, as the #4 in our museum here is wearing a short vest or bolero completely covering her breasts. In the old catalog this carving was shown in the more modest pose. My how times have changed! Your old saddle is in remarkable condition, an absolute gorgeous saddle."

AB Slaughter ordered this saddle on June 26, 1916 from the Miles City Saddlery.  He purchased it through the Elgin Supply Co. in Elgin, IL.  <Copy of Saddle Production Log Included>.  The saddle is a #4 saddle, 15" Montana tree, 16" swells, 18" fenders customized even further with the addition of the initials of the owner (A.B.S.) and his brand (Mbar) on the back cantle.  This saddle was made by top craftsman Rudy Mudra, who carved most of the premium saddles at Miles City Saddlery during this time period.

The saddle was purchased from the estate of Mr. Slaughter and <includes a copy of his obituary, Elgin, IL> from December 1943.
