Miniature Cowboy Rig

This handcrafted miniature saddle is perfected with the complete outfit needed by the most well-appointed cowboy.  The set is comprised entirely of exquisitely made 1/2 scale cowboy gear: saddle, riata, breast collar, quirt, cinch w/ horsehair "shoofly", headstall, bit, spurs, chaps.  There are buffalo fur woolly chaps made by Casey Jordan, saddle maker and silversmith par excellence (www.caseyjordansaddle.com), silver overlaid working spurs, a bridle and bit with engraved heart Conchos, and exquisitely hand-engraved, one-of-a-kind, full working model of a Colt single action 45, with an exquisitely embossed leather holster and a gunbelt which sports a marked Edward H. Bohlin buckle, tooled in a full floral pattern.  There is even a hand braided rawhide riata as well as a quirt with a leather handle and popper.

Exact measurements and details of the makers can be viewed by clicking on the links next to each item.  The saddle stand is included.

This is a "one-of-a-kind" collection which took a number of years to assemble at considerable expense.  The entire set will take up no more room than a waste-paper basket and is perfect for an office, a library or a prominent spot in a Great Room.

Salesman's sample saddles and cowboy gear originated in the late 1800's.  Sometimes referred to as "half-sized saddles", Western salesman's samples were not limited to saddles.  Almost any manufactured article to be sold in the early American West that was either too expensive to keep in inventory, too large to lug around on sales calls or had to be made to order for the buyer was made in miniature for use as a sales tool.

Made to exacting standards by the artisans who built the full sized articles, these samples were anywhere between 30% to 50% of the actual size of the item they were made to emulate.  Great attention to detail was given to each item, since it was to be used as a sales tool.

The majority of companies utilizing these miniature versions of their wares were selling in areas where catalogs and the manufacturers of the gear were not easily found, as it was impractical to load down a travelling salesperson with full sized merchandise.  Motivated by the growing number of cow towns and rail stops popping up on the frontier and the post cattle-drive prosperity of discerning cowboys and ranchers who needed quality gear, insightful saddle and tack suppliers began to build scaled down versions of the originals and the miniature art was born.

These salesman's sample miniatures made it possible for their salesmen to pack numerous examples of their work in a travelling trunk that could be easily moved from town to town in the remote and sparsely populated West.  Soon these samples were being used in shops where customers could see them and special order their own size or customized engraving of an item.  Salesmen and shopkeepers alike understood that these exquisite examples were much better than a picture in a catalog as the workmanship was much more apparent and the potential buyer was much more able to visualize what his rig would look like upon delivery.
