Peaceful Cloudforest Home in Monteverde, Costa Rica

If you've been looking for a property even remotely close to the idyllic mountain community of Monteverde, you'll know that it's very rare to find one for sale- especially a home owned by Americans and one established and maintained with an eye for conservation, wildlife habitat and local color since for approximately 30 years.  Casa Andesita is a property that is minutes from all the attractions, yet quiet and secluded.

This property was purchased by tropical ecologists in 1986- well before the wave of tourism hit the country.  It is a small, private forested retreat that has been well maintained, planted and extensively remodeled over the last 10 years. Casa Andesita boasts home, forest, fruit plantation, tropical landscaping, as well as internet, phone and electricity, and is now available for purchase.  We hope you enjoy these photographs of Casa Andesita and we look forward to hearing from you.

Location:

The west side of this peaceful and well forested property fronts on the quiet country road that leads from Monteverde to San Luis.  The property is approximately 5 miles (15 minutes) from the center of the nearby town of Santa Elena and approximately 2 miles (5 minutes) from the entrance to the world-renowned Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve.  From the porch, one can see the Gulf of Nicoya, and at night the lights of the coastal city of Puntarenas are visible in the distance, some 25 miles away as the crow flies.

Property Size:

The property measures approximately 1/2 acres.  The house is set back around 120 feet from the road, and is separated from the road and garage by a lawn and trees. The topography prevents any future building that would obstruct the view. The house measures a little less than 2000 square feet.

Ownership and History:

The title is free and clear, and all papers are in order.  No taxes are owed and there are no liens or mortgages against the property.

The land was originally acquired by the Monteverde Quaker community in the early 1950’s when they purchased a single large parcel of land and subdivided it among the various families into separate farms.

The home was purchased in 1986 and has been continuously occupied by the current owners until 2010.  Currently there are renters occupying the home - they are on a month-to-month lease and would be interested in staying on if the buyer is in agreement.

Rooms:

The house has high vaulted hardwood ceilings with exposed beams and red tile floors.  The newer part of the house has hardwood floors and built-in cabinets and shelves made with beautiful wood; the house currently has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living/dining area, kitchen with walk-in pantry, library, sitting room, laundry room, and large, covered porch.  The master bedroom has a walk-in closet with ample storage space.  The most recent renovation and remodeling was completed in 2000.

In 2001, a stand-alone storage building measuring 250 square feet was added behind the house.  There is a room to park two automobiles in the driveway and garage. The house has water, electricity, two telephone lines, and internet access.

Landscaping and Plantings:

On the north side of the house there is a substantial windbreak of natural cloud forest vegetation perhaps 300 feet in length, which is excellent habitat for birds and tropical wildlife, and is very effective in sheltering the house from wind and rain. On the south side of the house is an orchard containing bananas, plantains, lemon trees, and guava trees.  Native shrubbery includes heliconias, philodendrons, and prayer plants.

On the east side, the bordering property is protected by a covenant; thus an area of a quarter acre that borders this property was put into an easement which ensures that it cannot be developed or otherwise used by the owner. (Details upon request).

No farms or buildings are visible from the house and the house is almost entirely hidden from outside view, although its position on the side of a hill makes for a superb view.
