Item #SP770 / $750.
Very Early North & Judd Spurs
The trademark North & Judd anchor is stamped into the end of each each spur, but not underside of the shank, making these a very early pair of spurs. They measure 3" Wide at the opening of the yoke / Rowels are 1 1/4" in diameter with 20 points. The overall length is 5". The buckles on the leathers are also Anchor stamped. The chains are present (unusual in such an early pair of spurs) and both have a period repair. In 1832, the North Company began making saddlery hardware. In 1863, Hubert F. North and Lorin J. Judd founded the North & Judd Mfg. Co. In 1878, North & Judd began using the "Anchor" stamp to mark their pieces. By 1900, North & Judd employed 500 people. The North & Judd Mfg. Co. furnished products for the Spanish American War and World War One, and was in existence longer than any other spur manufacturer. In 1926, The North & Judd Mfg. Co. purchased the August Buermann Mfg. Co.. Prior to that, Buermann pieces were marked with the Buermann star with the initials AB inside. Subsequently, North and Judd placed their Anchor Mark next to the Buermann Star on many pieces. However, the company continued to manufacture the best designs of the Buermann shop and market them separately, marking them with an empty star and not adding the trademark anchor stamp.
