Item #A511 / $2,000.
Plains Indian Beaded Knife Sheath with Original Trade Knife This Plains Indian beaded sheath and knife was acquired at the estate auction of a museum quality collection that was established in the early 1920's. From the estate of noted archeologist, historian and collector, Robert Owen Browne. Mr. Browne was born in 1902. After graduating from Regis College in Denver, Colorado, he moved to California in 1927 to work for Standard Oil until his retirement in 1966. A founder of the Ojai Valley Museum, the Albinger Archeological Museum and the Archeological Society of Ventura County, Mr. Robert Owen Browne continued his education, making a name for himself in anthropology and archaeology and was chosen to study with Dr. Leakey in Kenya in 1966. In 1989, Mr. Browne was honored for distinguished contributions to California history by the Conference of California Historical Societies. This Plains Indian knife and sheath collection at an auction of Mr. Owen Browne's estate. This piece predates the tourist trade and is made of rawhide decorated with pointed brass tacks and blue and white seed beads in a lightening pattern on the outside of the sheath. The sheath has a long hide fringe and is adorned with a lock of hair of unknown origin, though presumed to be a scalp lock. The stitching is of sinew. A piece of untanned hide is covering a thick piece of leather which makes the stiff inner core of the the piece. The sheath was constructed to be worn on a belt and features an opening that is 2 1/2 inches in length. The tacks are 1/4inches in diameter with a distinct point. The original knife is included, it was loose to facilitate instant drawing of the knife. This is an early piece of Plains Indian leather and bead work. Measurements: Top to bottom: 10 1/2inches. Across (at the top): 4 1/4 inches. Fringe: approx. 13inches. Lock of hair: 8 inches long.
Accompanying the sheath, is a well-used trade knife traded throughout the West.
This knife was in the sheath at the time of acquisition by the original
collector.
This specimen is particularly
special in that it has been worn and sharpened and used to the point that
the blade is so thin that it can be easily bent, like a fish filet knife.
The handle has the very characteristic metal adornment in wood. Overall
length is 11 and 1/2" by 1". The blade is 6 and 3/4" (probably 7 at the
time of manufacture) and the handle is 4 and 3/4". Very good condition - a
well balanced and nice design.
