Monteverde, Santa Elena de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

About the Region:

The Quakers who moved to the area from the U.S. in the1950’s named their land “Monteverde”, or Green Mountain, and it still goes by that name.  Temperatures are moderate and pleasant year-round.  Daytime temperatures are in the low to mid-seventies, dropping at night to the high sixties.  For most North Americans, Monteverde's cool climate is most attractive.

Monteverde and its commercial center of Santa Elena are located at an elevation of some 4200 feet in cloud forest habitat in the lee of the Tilaran Mountain Range.  Home to the resplendent quetzal, sloths and the three-wattled bellbird, the site is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and mist-cloaked mountaintops with majestic forest trees dripping with orchids and ferns, giant strangler figs, and a bird fauna guaranteed to excite even the most well-traveled birder.

There are two direct buses daily to and from the capital city of San Jose. Automobile travel from the Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela (just outside San Jose) takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours; travel from the Liberia International Airport  takes about the same amount of time.

The nearest surfing breaks (Doña Ana, Boca Barranca) are a mere 2 hours away by automobile.  Excellent beaches to the south include Playa Hermosa and Jaco, which are 3.5 hours away.  The beautiful Pacific coast beaches of Guanacaste are as little as 4.5 hours away.

The Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, is located around 10 miles away, and can be reached by road in around 4.5 hours, or by crossing the Arenal Lake by motor launch in just 3 hours.

Local Attractions:

Santa Elena, the town center for the Monteverde area, has full-service banks, shops, hotels, a wide diversity of restaurants, coffee shops, churches, schools, internet cafes, hardware stores, bookstores, office and school supplies, lumber yards, farm supplies, grocery stores, bakeries, ice cream parlors, souvenir and gift shops, art galleries with original creations by local artists and sculptors, appliance stores, both public and private clinics with 24-hour emergency medical services, pharmacies, and veterinary services.  A new mall is currently under construction, which will have additional restaurants and shops, travel agencies, financial services, and entertainment facilities.

The neighboring parks and reserves (Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve; Santa Elena Reserve; Children’s International Forest; and several of small private reserves) have world-class trails for hiking and bird watching; soft adventure activities such as canopy bridges, zip lines, horseback riding, and guided night hikes; butterfly gardens, insect museums, coffee tours, orchid gardens, and tours of the Monteverde Cheese Factory which produces outstanding cheeses and ice cream. Click on the link for more area information--http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/

Monteverde has an active community of artists and musicians from Costa Rica, North America, and Europe, and is host each year to the Monteverde Music Festival, bringing in exceptional performances by international and Costa Rican musicians. There are active choral groups, amateur drama productions, regular film festivals, art studios, and a pottery guild.  There are also local dances every weekend, with excellent bands playing salsa, meringue, and cumbia music.

In addition to the public schools, there are three excellent bilingual elementary and secondary schools in the Santa Elena/Monteverde area (Cloud Forest School; Monteverde Friends School, Adventist School).  These schools draw a talented faculty from both Costa Rica and the U.S.

One of the earliest areas of Costa Rica to be protected, the Monteverde Cloud Forest and surrounding pristine wildlife habitat is often used as subjects for publications-- Click here for more information from others who have experience in the area.

[Note of interest, if the person buying the house wants to be able to rent the house out for periods of time, the large number of expatriate teachers and their families, and research scientists on sabbatical, who come to the area for a few months, a semester, or a year or two represent a constant pool of potential renters!]
