Item #C1879 / $4,800.

1879 Colt Single Action Army Revolver

This one-of-a-kind Colt is a single action .45 caliber revolver, all matching serial numbers 50,XXX, manufactured in 1879 in the Hartford, Connecticut plant.  The barrel address shows "COLT'S PT. FA. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. USA".  The left front side of the frame is marked COLTS PATENT 1871, 1872 and 1875 in three lines.  As is correct for this firearm, the finish is a standard blued with casehardened steel frame and hammer.  The Rampant Colt stamp is not present, as that mark was not instituted until much later production - around the 139,000 serial number range.  Neither is there a caliber marking on the barrel, for the same reason.

The ivory grips on this SAA are beyond wonderful.  Carved of ivory and featuring a beautifully rendered artisan detail of a steer head on one side (right).  The venerable age of this piece of Wild West ranching history is showing in the myriad cracks and a few chips that are present, but the true collector will take that as part of the character of the piece to be enjoyed.
