Vintage Doctor's Visiting Bag - made by the C. P. Shipley Saddlery

This fantastic early 1900's triple horn-back alligator skin doctor's visiting bag was made by the CP Shipley Saddlery and shown in their catalog.  This wonderful carry case was made with a slide button solid brass top clasp and flip up dual side locks.  The structured, rolled skin handle and skin covered top frame show some minor wear, typical of a used bag of this age.  The bag features three full center-cut tail horn-back skin pieces, artfully centered to best effect.  The bottom and gussets are lined with beautiful large-scaled skin.  There are some minor areas of wear/use that have resulted in some tearing, as shown in the photographs.  However, these serve to enhance the overall vintage aesthetic of the piece. The skins and genuine leather piping are in wonderfully supple condition for a bag any age - very hard to find in one of this age.

The interior is lined with cloth that is in very good condition, showing some interesting staining and bearing no rips or tears.  There is also a long side pocket. This is a beautiful piece of history that would be of interest to collectors of CP Shipley items, Western Americana and leather work, as well as a venerable addition to any medical collection.

The Shipley Saddlery was located in Kansas City, Missouri.  Their success was based upon the location of the shop close to the Kansas City Stockyards, where all the working cowhands and ranchers would have exposure to his shop when bringing in their herds.  Their shop branched out with the use of catalogs, published to extend their influence across the country and into Canada.  Their advertising and the quality of their products gave them a large share of the market.  The Spurs, Chaps, Boots, Bits, Specialty bags like this one as well as saddles produced by the Shipley shop are all of the highest quality and quite collectible.
