Vintage Studded Shipley Chaps

Historic maker and thick suede with extensive decoration.  This is a rare pair of chaps -- maker stamped on the belt "C. P. SHIPLEY MAKER / Kansas City, MO".  The front pockets are closed with marked Shipley snaps - "C. P. / Shipley / KC".  They are Rough-Out chaps, meaning they are constructed of tanned cowhide that has been turned inside out to construct the leggings.  The "rough" side is on the "out" side - the smooth side of the leather is inside the chaps, against the leg.  This makes the leg slip more easily, making the movement of the chaps more comfortable for the cowboy.

The belt is nicely engraved with scalloped edges.  The buckle is strong, as are the laces.  1-inch snaps run the length of each leg, spaced every 3 inches.  1/2-inch tacks (studs) decorate the edges of each leg, spaced every inch.

These Shipleys are quite well used - the patina is gorgeous where the chaps would have come in contact with saddle and horse.  A few of the leg closures have come out of the leather.  Shipley leather goods, especially chaps, are highly collectible and are prized by collectors of Western Americana and Cowboy Antiques.
