"A Note to the Reader

Ramon F. Adams is well known to all serious collectors of Western Americana, having devoted half a century to the serious study of the old-time cowboy and the innumerable books written by and about him.  A bibliographer, lexicographer, and historian, he is perhaps best known for his The Rampaging Herd: A Bibliography of Books and Pamphlets on Men and Events in the Cattle Industry, Six Guns and Saddle Leather: A Bibliography of Books and Pamphlets on Western Outlaws and Gunmen, and Burs Under the Saddle: A Second Look at Books and Histories of the West... [SIC]... The Cowman & His Code of Ethics is the final volume in Adams' trilogy on the American Cowboy, published by the Encino Press in collector editions.  The first volume, The Cowman & His Philosophy, was published in 1967 in an edition of 750 numbered and signed copies.  The following year, 850 copies of The Cowboy & His Humor were issued, again in a numbered, signed edition.  Both went out of print shortly after publication."

About Ramon Adams:

Ramon Frederick Adams, noted western author and bibliographer, was born on October 3, 1889, in Moscow, Texas.  Adams first became interested in cowboys and the West while growing up in the Brunner Addition on the outskirts of Houston. The Adams' house was near a minor cattle trail, and the cowboys frequently stopped for lunch nearby. Young Adams spent many a noontime with the cattlemen, listening to them weave their tales and being fascinated by their salty and colorful language. The fascination he had of cowmen and their way of life (which was quickly disappearing) stayed with him throughout his lifetime. In fact, it was his fascination and respect for the cowboy that prompted him to crisscross the country in search of research material. Never a cowboy himself, he befriended countless of them and has become perhaps their most important chronicler.  He passed away in April, 1976.
