About The Governor Paul McNutt Stetson
The hat is unparalleled in the iconic Texas / Oklahoma oilman style that
was as flamboyant and large as they come. It is a beautiful
representation of the time and a wonderful piece of history on many
fronts - the Miller Brothers were the founders of the 101 Ranch and Wild
West Show in Ponca, Oklahoma. Governor McNutt served his state in
Indiana as well as his country in Washington D.C. and as commissioner of
the United States to the Philippines during World War II. This hat
is the best that money could buy at the time. It is still better
than the best being made Governor McNutt was born in a small town and rose to the Deanship of a leading law school, worked in private practice and was elected Governor of Indiana from 1933 to 1937, during the height of the depression. Subsequently President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him High Commissioner to the Philippines, Federal Security Administrator, and War Manpower Commissioner for the United States. He was a leading contender for the nomination for President of the United States prior to the 1940 Democratic convention. He then became the popular choice for the Vice Presidential nomination, but declined the honor in deference to the wishes of his Chief. After the war, President Harry S. Truman again appointed him High Commissioner to the Philippines, and when the Islands were granted their independence in 1946, McNutt became the first US Ambassador to the new Republic.
George Warren Daiber
(1876-1933) owned the first men's clothing store in Cheyenne and was
also married to Clara Beard, daughter to Cyrus Beard, Supreme court
justice of Wyoming for many years. The Daiber's were a very prominent
family in Cheyenne. He opened his store with his brothers William
and Edward Daiber. There is another connection between the Daiber store and
Oklahoma oil fields (besides this hat). William Daiber who was also a
wildcat oil driller in Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. Size: Measures 8inches front to back, interior opening. Read more about Governor McNutt in the book "Paul V.
