1915 World Expo

About This Antique Stetson, Designed by Maurice L. Rothschild:

This exquisite gentleman's bowler hat was made by Stetson after the design by eminent clothier Maurice L. Rothschild of Chicago, IL.  Rothschild's opened in 1905 and supplied clothing and hats to many notable and successful gentlemen, among them one of Chicago's most notorious citizens, Al Capone.  This bowler is the gold medal winning design for gentleman's hats at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.  It is housed in the original box and is in almost unworn condition.

The Maurice L. Rothschild Building, in Chicago was built to house the clothier in 1910.  It still stands as one of the tallest skyscrapers, although it now houses other businesses.  The black  bowler in the Pure Cowboy collection is featured on the cover of the 1916 Maurice L Rothschild catalog at left.  This hat was specially made for a gentleman whose name is now lost to history, but whose initials are embossed on the silk liner below the makers' markings in gold and black lettering: "E L C".  The hat is in exceptionally pristine condition.

The only issue being the slight fold of the ribbon edge of one end of the hat band from improper fitting into the box many years ago for storage.  The hat retains its paper sizing stub, stating 7 1/8. 

Maker Marks: "JOHN B. STETSON COMPANY" written between two circles representing the Gold Medal achieved by the collaborative design team of Maurice L Rothschild and John B. Stetson at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.  Above it is an eagle in flight and below are the words "American Manufacturing / EXCELLENT QUALITY / ESPECIALLY DESIGNED BY MAURICE L ROTHSCHILD".  Below that are the initials mentioned previously: "E L C".  On the interior hatband is written: "COMFORT".     Size: 7 1/8
