Adams first became interested in cowboys and the West while growing up in the Brunner Addition on the outskirts of Houston. The Adams' house was near a minor cattle trail, and the cowboys frequently stopped for lunch nearby. Young Adams spent many a noontime with the cattlemen, listening to them weave their tales and being fascinated by their salty and colorful language. The fascination he had of cowmen and their way of life (which was quickly disappearing) stayed with him throughout his lifetime. In fact, it was his fascination and respect for the cowboy that prompted him to crisscross the country in search of research material. Never a cowboy himself, he befriended countless of them and has become perhaps their most important chronicler. He passed away in April, 1976. About Nick Eggenhoffer:
His family migrated to New Jersey in 1913, and the young man's fascination with the region continued to grow . He yearned to travel the wide open spaces of the wild west. It would be many years until he had the opportunity to do so. Instead, he rode the metaphoric range of his imagination and soon became one of the most prolific illustrators of Western Pulp magazines. Thousands of these magazines were produced on a weekly basis and the demand was enormous. Despite demands on his time, Mr. Eggenhoffer was a true student of Western history. He was a careful researcher and prided himself on the historical accuracy of his depictions of the men and women who settled the West and the tools they used. After many years, he and his wife eventually were able to settle in Cody, Wyoming, only a short distance from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, bringing his childhood fascination with the American West full circle.
