In 1860, the Beaver Brand line
of hats was established in St. Louis, Missouri, the fur capital of
America. St.
Louis-based fur trappers and traders were the source of great local
wealth; the Missouri Fur Company was founded in 1809 and dominated the
Missouri Valley for the next 40 years. The city became a logical point
of departure for explorers setting off on westward journeys. The most
famous of these undertakings is the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804
to 1806. Eventually as many as 50 wagons a day crossed the Mississippi
River at St. Louis on the trek westward, and the arrival of the first
steamboat from New Orleans in 1817 was the first sign of the city's
importance as a river trading center.

About This Rare Vintage Beaver Brand Hat:
The Beaver Brand name has endured. The company is still in business today - and is one of the few that continues to make its hats in the USA. This hat bears a vintage white silk lining, not the modern black or red lining of the newer hats made by Beaver Brand. This hat is in like new condition, with the exception of the addition of a pin to the front crown of the hat. The maker is identified in the silk lining which is decorated with a picture of a beaver within a scroll under which are the words: "BEAVER HATS". Below the fancy scroll is written: "Always A Standard of Quality". The paper tag is still attached and says: "7 1/2 custom made". The black felt is rolled at the edges and the crown is formed in a 'ridge top' crease. The band is also black, made of complimentary 1/2 inch ribbon with the ends left long for effect. This is a 'cowboy hat' in the purest sense - the style is Eastern in origin, evoking a time before the name Cowboy Hat was part of the vernacular, made of a thick beautifully made felt, in black, with a rolled brim - creased just right.
