Saddles Horsehair Bridles Quirts & Rawhide

Item #HHB430   SOLD

About This Horsehair Bridle Set:

This hitched horsehair bridle was made in Deer Lodge Prison, Montana in the early 1900's.  It was acquired from the collection of a rancher in Texas, who had brought it with him out of Montana.  It is a piece that has seen a lot of action.  The hitching and patterns are true to the Deer Lodge 'formula' - colorful geometric shapes rendered in bright reds, pinks, greens, yellows, blues on a natural background.  The drops (natural color, two on the forehead and two on the nose) are attached to thickly braided horsehair, which keeps the brow band a specific distance from the poll.  The ring that would have been there is missing and has been tied instead with a piece of rawhide.

The rosettes at the brow band show a white horse cantering on a red background.  They are covered with hitched horsehair, as are the two lower rosettes, which feature an unusual picture of a jockey's cap and whip with a green garland on a glittering gold background.  The leather straps that have been used to attach the brow band and the rosettes is in perfect condition and the stitching is sound.  The lower rosettes are attached with horsehair in an intricately conceived series of knotted buttons and buttonholes all made with hitched horsehair pieces.

This bridle has a chin piece that would attach to the front of the bit and hang beneath the horse's chin.  It is very nicely hitched and patterned and features a large tassel in the middle.  The reins are in good condition, though they do have some small areas of use wear that go to the core of the hitching.  Measurements: The bridle is 21" long.  The reins are 52" long.  There is no bit in this set.

This piece is a very nice example of Deer Lodge Montana Prison work.  It would be at home in any collection of Western Americana and would bring instant legitimacy to a Western room.
