Tom Johnson [1875 - 1915] Texas Gal Leg Spurs About The Spurs:
The spurs are not marked, as Tom Johnson did not mark his spurs. Condition is very good, all parts are solid. These spurs measure 3" Wide at the opening of the yoke / Rowels are 1" in diameter with 5 points. The overall length is 6 1/4". The buttons measure 1/2". The leathers are from the O. J. Snyder Saddlery of Denver, Colorado. They are beautifully basket-stamped and are in good condition. These spurs are extremely similar to the example shown in Bit and Spur Makers In The Texas Tradition, by Ned and Jody Martin. About Texas Spur Maker Tom Johnson: The lack of a maker's mark is correct, as Tom Johnson did not mark many of his spurs and bits. These spurs were made the same year that he met fellow spur maker John Robert McChesney. Johnson later would work with Pascal Kelly (whose sister he married), in McChesney's Texas shop. A true piece of Western spur history. Unquestionably early and extremely collectible. "Nine months later, in 1911, Kelly and fellow employee Tom Johnson opened up their own business in Dalhart, Texas. Although the partners eventually parted ways that year, Johnson was married to Kelly’s sister; when Johnson died in 1915, Kelly completed his brother-in-law’s outstanding orders (leaving the spurs unmarked as Johnson would have done)." These spurs are a beautiful
example of a pair of intricately made working spurs, made in 1910. The
card suit and gal leg detail is provocatively conceived by the maker. These spurs are
hand-forged and adorned with silver buttons,
legs and hearts. The top of the gartered hose and the diamonds are in
bronze. The stockings show a wonderful detail, down to the knit
pattern of the stockings and the heels of the dainty shoes.
